All These Adjustments

Whew, what a week it’s been! School started on Monday and it’s been a whirlwind of other things on top of that to figure out!

I had everything ready come Monday, or so I thought…and of course, nothing went as planned. I have never had an easy time reading articles for school online and of course, I have like, 5,000 pages of reading to do online.  Jokes on me, right? Online classes means ONLINE MATERIALS…I’m such an idiot. Well, it’s been an adjustment, lets just say that. It’s been hard to get back in the groove of being self motivated when I don’t actually ever to go to a class and see a professor. And it’s been, well, almost six years since I’ve written an essay? How easily I forget how to write a paper for class! Ok, not really but I’m always nervous at the start of school how each professor likes their papers written.  Anyhow, I’ve spent many-a-hours reading materials out of these books and articles from the professors…has been very interesting…

GIS requires a lot of windows being open and big maps and such, so I figured my tiny 15 inch screen wasn’t going to cut it so I found this awesome monitor that’s 23.5 inches! It has amazing quality and I love being able to have two windows open at a normal size at the same time! And, I can even have three by adding in the screen from my laptop. A geographer’s greatest dream. Well, other than being out in the field. At least for me.

So as easy I would love to say everything is going it isn’t. Honey has been having a hard time adjusting to everything also. I’m around all day which I’m sure she’s enjoying, but at night time, it’s like she thinks I’ve disappeared into thin air every morning at 4 AM and starts crying. So on top of adjusting to school, I’ve been lacking a serious amount of sleep.

I have been trying various things like playing with her before she goes to bed, giving her some food, buying a diffuser with calming pheromones…and nothing. She continues to get up at 4am by calling and driving Whit up the wall in frustration. Of course I’m not helping because I get up, feed her, then close the door and sleep in the next room on the couch but that’s where the biggest problem is: I can’t let her cry. We are in an apartment where pets aren’t technically allowed, so if we’re found out, we’re in trouble. So, obviously crying = bad times in so many ways. Whit is literally at his wits end and I’m getting there…Yikes.  All the research says to let them cry it out but I literally can’t, so I’m stuck at what to do. Help!

Anyhow, I have been birding to keep myself sane though. I have visited two separate places throughout Ventura and it’s surrounding areas to see what different species I could find. And what do you know, I got to see two different endangered species breeding colonies on the beach! Granted they aren’t breeding right now because they’re done, so no cute adorably fluffy chicks, but still cute birds!

The two endangered species are the Western Snowy Plover and California Least Tern:

Snowy PloverLeast TernAren’t they so cute!? Of course!

Here are a few other birds I’ve seen too:

Ventura_SantaClaraRiver 199 Ventura_SantaClaraRiver 171 Brown PelicanAlong with the few trips I’ve been taking to the beach to see some birds, there have been some regulars duking it out at my feeder throughout the day…acting as a distraction from writing papers/reading.

Anna's HummingbirdI’m going to try and get some better shots this weekend because I took this one in the afternoon when there was no light on my side of the building. Very beautiful humming bird though!

Oh, but I’ve also been getting back into running! Yay! Well, with a few trials and tribulations here and there, but it’s coming along! I mentioned that I joined a running club in the area and it has been super fun! I’ve made a few friends and although have yet to hang out with any of them outside of practice, I have a few numbers! Anyhow, we have a speed/endurance workout on Tuesday nights at a local park where this last Tuesday we ran hills on the trails! It was covered in dirt by the time I got home! It was an awesome run though! We ran a 1/3 of a mile on the trail at a speedy clip. I kept track of my splits for each one: 2:27, 2:25, 2:22, 2:20, 2:19. By the time we finished I was spent, but it was great having the motivation of other teammates to keep me going!

We also do long runs on Saturday mornings which have been a hit or miss lately. I’ve been having some pretty gnarly intestinal and exhaustion/recovery issues lately so that’s been hampering things a little. A lot of the other runners are doing the Santa Barbara half marathon in November and are trying hard to convince me to run it, but I’m a tad hesitant with my hip. Ever since it got injured a few years ago from the marathon I have been scared to run anything over 7 miles for fear of it flaring up again and taking me out of commission for good. So frustrating since I’ve just gotten back to it and faster than I was in high school!

Anyhow, that’s about all for now! Going to spend some time outdoors this weekend with it being an extended holiday weekend and getting ready for a job interview! YAY! Fingers crossed!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! I can’t wait to see what everyone plans on doing!

Good luck with school! i love my dual monitors and it’s definitely helpful, once you get used to it you will never want to go back haha. I hope Honey will start adjusting better and that you can get some good sleep soon!

Ouch…I’m not sure what to do about Honey. I haven’t been in that situation, but I sure hope you find relief soon!

I hadn’t realised you are doing online classes. I agree that reading online is difficult, and printing things out comes with the guilt of all the wasted paper! I end up printing stuff I know that I will use and reference for a long time, which has been a good compromise…but books will always be my preferred option. (And did you know that studies show reading comprehension is significantly lower when you’re reading on a computer screen? So we’re totally normal!)

Yeah, I don’t think I even wrapped my mind around the fact that I was taking an online class…where everything would be online. Where was my head? Who the heck knows. It’s only week one and I’m already feeling guilty about wasting paper! I’m trying to see how I do with shorter article and reading those online, saving the harder and better reference articles for printing, like you said. It’s so hard though; I like tangible information! And I totally agree that comprehension probably goes down reading things online….if anything, it makes me squint too much, giving me a headache, making me sleeping and not remembering anything I read! What a horrible round robin! hahaha! But yes, online classes…for the next two semesters. Yikes. Maybe more if I decide to do my thesis…which I probably won’t because now I remember how much I don’t like school and it stresses me out. I’d rather work out in the field!

Good luck with the job interview and school and the Honey situation!
What job did you apply for? I love the action shot of the bird where you can see the wings flapping!

Hope the job interview goes well! I love the dual-monitor set-up; I bet you feel like a read badass. (I would.)

Funny thing about all the birds–I just saw all of their East coast equivalents this past week!!

    • Melissa says:

Yeah, I do kind of feel like a bad ass with the big monitor. haha. Yay for seeing all those birds! I wish I could see the E.Coast ones!

so sorry to hear about honey’s tough time adjusting. hang in there! i had that problem w my kitty once too. she settled down, but it did take some time. what i did was take her to the vet to be sure she wasn’t sick, and i also found playing with her before bed seemed to help. i do love the pic of honey on your newspaper :)
