Back to the Grind

Hi Everyone!

Sorry to have gone MIA on you, things got crazy busy as I started field work again last week! I was sent out to various places in Palm Springs, the San Jacinto Mountains and Orange County to find various types of birds, and it was so nice to be back where all the birds are! I have missed the trees, plants and forests!

I also had the pleasure of FINALLY being able to go to the newly renovated Native Foods Cafe last week too! I absolutely inhaled this tempeh burger and sweet potato fries. I swear I was full for like 7 hours, and that was with some hiking and a 5 mile run! Talk about a hearty lunch!

And to set off the weekend right I headed out to Ventura to visit Whit at his new place, which is beautifully set within minutes walking distance from downtown Ventura! We saw Django Friday night and spent some time on Saturday at the Ventura Pier and boardwalk! I contemplated going for a run, but was too tired to even think about it really…oops.

But I had a legit reason for not running on Sunday because I was out in the valley netting some birds for banding! I absolutely love extracting birds from the nets and being ableĀ  to hold them. There is something amazing about being able to hold a delicate bird in your hand versus just watching it fly away from you in the sky. They’re so magnificent!

instagramjan1(This is a California Thrasher. Such a unique bird!)

I have made it back to the desert for a week of work looking for some birds and bird nests/activity so get ready for lots of pretty pictures of…the desert. Heh. But in between all of that I have been running to train for the Ragnar Race I’m taking part in in AZ in ONE MONTH EXACTLY and some Insanity here and there to keep up my strength training. So busy!!! I should get on that training for the race though…somehow I keep putting it off.

How has everyone been?! I am sorry to have been missing out on all your blog posts!

  1. What did you think of django? I thought it was brilliant! That burger + sweet tater fries looks amazing!

    • Melissa says:

I didn’t have any expectations going into Django so I was kind of overwhelmed by it, in all honesty. I still thought it was a good movie though and all the actors were great!

  2. Gorgeous pics, so jealous of your “office”! :-) The tempeh burger looks amazing, wow!

    • Melissa says:

Thanks! I can’t complain about the “office”, although when it starts to get hot I might start disliking it…hehe.

So happy you are back in the field where I know you love. But right now I am thinking sweet potato fries!

I love all the beautiful photos your post from the field, Melissa!!

Yay banding!!! :D Isn’t it great when the “office” is the great outdoors, even when the conditions aren’t the best. *ahem* scrubitch *ahem* California thrashers are so big! I wasn’t expecting that…brown thrashers are big, but not that big. We definitely need to schedule a birding trip/vacation/something within the next year or so…what do you think?
