Birding Thursday: Bald Eagle Calls

Birding Thursday: Bald Eagle Calls

I want to clarify something for all of you. Because it is such a huge pet peeve for me that every time it happens, I want to throw something at the TV.

Listen carefully to the call this Bald Eagle is making (Sorry, links to YouTube, go to 26 seconds for the call)

Now, listen to the call from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Notice anything different? YES!! That’s because the call in the commercial, is actually this bird.

I have seen dozens of movies with the beautiful Bald Eagle soaring in the air…only to hear it make a red-tailed hawk call. The reason for this? I have read several article on the subject and apparently the eagle does not make enough of a strong or majestic call, but the red-tailed hawk does. Not only have I heard it in place of the real Bald Eagle call, but also for Golden Eagles, Kestrels and other birds of the like.

Drives me CRAZY.

Hope you enjoyed my bit of a raging bird tidbit. Haha. Just want you to know that when you hear that call out on your walk, it’s actually a red-tailed hawk. :)

And sometimes that call is also actually a really clever starling or Stellar’s Jay just “pretending”. Which cracks me up every time I hear it…
