Hi everyone! I swear I have been trying to finish blogging about Foodbuzz…but thought I would mix it up with something else I’m celebrating right now: Whit and I have been dating for a year now! Remember when I told you about how we really met? Well, we’re still going strong!
We decided to go away for a weekend out to the beach so of course, he could get some surf in and so I could get some birding and new spots to run in! We decided on San Luis Obispo, which is also very close to Morro Bay and Pismo Beach. I have never been to any of them in my life (even though I’ve lived a mere 2-3 hours away) and was super excited for it.
We arrived in town Friday evening and immediately hit up the downtown area to find some dinner! We were eating super early, think before 5pm, but we were all about listening to to our bellies on what time to get food. I did some research online before we came out and found a great place for our first dinner: Big Sky Cafe
The place had a hippie feel, with a nice daily special menu written on the walls, and some good selection for those who like meat, seafood, meat-free or gluten-free foods.
After consulting Yelp, I decided to have their Vegetarian Bean Burger with Sweet Potato Fries.
Whit had an appetizer and meal for dinner including Seared Ahi Tunu with a Wasabi-Avocado Mousse and Gumbo Yaya:
Whit was a huge fan of both his meals and I liked my meal, but the sweet potato fries the most. The bean burger was good, but a tad dry, and the bun took away from the flavor so I ate most of the burger without it.
Saturday morning Whit and I hit up Morro Bay so he could get in a morning surf session and I could get in a run. I went out along the embarcadero for my run and near the rock in the bay to get in a 5 mile, 45 min run…that sadly severely aggravated my hip, AGAIN (so frustrating…). Whit got some good surf in and came out as frozen as a popsicle because of the water temps…and I finished up the morning with some birding around the rock.
By the time we were cleaned up at the beach were ready for some serious food and after many suggestions from his friends, decided to go to Taco Temple. On Yelp this place was raved about for it’s great tacos (obviously) and some killer carrot cake…and if you know me, I’m a big carrot cake fan and it takes quite a bit to satisfy that pallet of mine!
They have a self serve chips and salsa station that we took advantage of while waiting for our orders. I go the Vegetable Bean Burrito:
While Whit got the Calamari Taco plate, but it was more like a salad since the tortilla shells were buried underneath everything.
And since the carrot cake was raved about so much in the reviews I had to get a piece. O.M.G. Can you believe the size of this slice? I ate like, an 1/8th of the piece and took the rest home. It was a good cake, but after saving it and eating it heated up (it was served room temp) a day later at home it was soooo much better. I want to suggest they serve it heated up to their customers!
I actually ended up pretty sick in the afternoon so we took some time to nap and then headed out again to visit Pismo Beach!
We wandered the pier for a while so Whit could watch the surfers…and critique them, haha… then headed back into town to get some dinner. My stomach still felt a little off so we figured a nice bowl of soup would go over well and settled on one we found at a Japanese restaurant called Baku.
We started off with a seaweed salad to split, then had some nice meals for dinner.
I chose to have the soba noodle dish with tofu while Whit had the happy hour special of a 1/2 spicy tuna roll with Asian clam chowder and two pieces of tombu nigiri.
It was just what we needed to satisfy us…but not before getting some fro yo to end the night! Ok, I got fro yo since I had seen so many of them in the past few days…
Come Sunday morning my hip wasn’t feeling well enough to run while Whit went surfing again, so I went to the dunes in Pismo Beach to find some birds! I found a few nice species including a Red-shouldered Hawk, Black Phoebe and Bushtits! it was a great trip!
We went back to the hotel to clean up and pack before realizing we were hungry and needed some real breakfast/lunch. We were going to go to the Natural Cafe, which was just down the street from Big Sky Cafe, but it was closed, so we decided to go back to Big Sky again for brunch! We loved it so much the first time we didn’t mind going again!
Whit was all over the vegetarian eggs benedict with portabello mushrooms, tomato and spinach.
But I had more of a lunch feeling going on so I decided to have the daily soup of Moroccan Pumpkin and Parsnip Soup with a few small pieces of cornbread. I also had a house salad with some balsamic to round out the meal.
We sadly had to leave and make our way back to the valley and mountains so start work again…I can’t wait to go back again though! There were so many places we wanted to visit and eat at!
