In The Right Direction

I am doing well on the 2011 Goals and can’t wait to share!

I am adamant about getting rid of Ziploc bags from my home and life.  They create things like this, that pollute our earth, ground water and oceans.  It breaks my heart.

ocean-1

So I did what I thought best.  No, not move to using foil or plastic wrap.  Same difference to me and creates more trash. Trash, trash, trash!

I went on a mission after getting a comment from Amanda about reusable bags available on Etsy.  Oh how excited I was!

I knew this was going to be a god-send to me.  I currently use Ziploc bags but NO MORE!  I went to the BagitConscious site on Etsy and was ecstatic at the different colors/patterns I could get in two different sizes! I ended up getting two sandwich and two snack size bags to help me out in the field!  And of course, this goes well with the reusable lunch bag that I got from Target earlier last year.

Do you use a reusable lunch bag or containers for your food?!  Would you consider using reusable lunch bags, even though you have to wash them (this is what I find deters people the most when it comes to reusable bags…)?

~~

Tis was a chilly day today!

I woke up this morning famished (that salad last night did nothing for me apparently) so I had to have my most heavy sitting breakfast in the kitchen: Oats!

pics 002

But this time I used a bananaGASP!  I knew I was going to bring an apple out to the field with me so I opted for the banana in breakfast instead!  Same mixture as my normal apple oats of course…almond butter/pb/cranberry spread…I can’t venture too far away.

A few hours later I had this horrible pain in the side of my body next to my stomach…so I thought I was hungry.  I tried using an apple to cure the pain…

pics 004

And that didn’t work…so I snacked on two of my homemade Blackberry Oatmeal BarsThat didn’t work either…so I drank a ton of water and hoped for the best.

pics 016

Besides, I was too busy admiring the DESERT scenery…yes, the MOJAVE DESERT.  Ya know, that place that gets up to 120*F+ during the summer!?

pics 006

Oh yes…actually the point I’m standing on I had to hike to because the roads are all washed out…it’s gonna make for a hard winter season…as it can last up until May with snow. Oiy!

pics 007

More fun for me!

pics 014

I got home at a decent hour and wasn’t too hungry, but ate lunch just for kicks.  I’ll admit, I was a tad bit bored and just wanted to get lunch over with, so there is was and happened.  It looks sad yes…that tomato basil morningstar farm burger with mustard and tomatoes…sadly no lettuce/spinach cause I’m out and will be gone all weekend.

pics 018

Then I proceeded to pass out on the couch for a while…the cold kicked my butt!

I waited for my running buddy to call and let me know she was ready for our run and boy oh boy was it a doozy!  She lives in the hills and we hadn’t run them in a while (stupid knee injury) so I was feeling ready to try them again!  We ran the 4.7 miles in just over an hour, and much of that time was needed to keep from slipping and sliding in the mud and snow slush all over the dirt roads!  Whoooeee!

I was very much ready for dinner after cleaning up so I started on a roasted sweet potato with italian spices along with some broccoli and brussel sprouts.  I also scrambled two eggs to add some protein into the mix.

Perfect for the palate that needs some clean eats.

pics 027

Oh wait, did I say clean eats?  Guess that was smashed for the day when I ate not one, not two, but three of these Dark Chocolate Covered Peppermint Joe Joe’s for dessert…um, dessert/chocolate craving anyone?  At least some part of me is happy to have had them…

I’m doing laundry to prepare for this weekend!  It’s gonna be a long one with my cousin getting married, then my aunt being in town from NM so we’ve got a family gathering going on too!  I don’t  know how I’m going to get through the whole thing, especially all the driving!  Ah!  But I will get my last long run in there, hopefully Saturday morning on the beach of about 8-10 miles.  We’ll see how I feel!

It’s just about the weekend! Yay!!!

It's great that you're following through with your goals! Did you know that most of the rubbish that enters the ocean ends up on a beach in Hawaii because that's where the ocean currents naturally take it? It's so awful to think how the oceanic wildlife are being affected by all of the plastic and what not floating around in the sea :( LOVE what you are doing for the environment, hun!!

Reusable bags are the best! My kids go to a 'green school' so they're not allowed to have any garbage in their lunches at all. No baggies and no packaging (unless it's recyclable). We a combo of bags and storage containers. Way to go!

  3. Maria @ Chasing the Now says:

I love the new bags (and your header–when did that change?). My husband and I use a lot of ziplocks, so I am actually going to look into something like this. I hate the ziplocks and don't mind washing reusables.

Yay for rocken goals. I'm doing well on mine too. I use a reusable lunch bag and I love it!

  6. Gabriela says:

Yayyy happy weekend!! I love those Jo Jos. My boyfriend's mom got a bunch for their family and portioned them all out into little baggies so that no one would eat each other's. That's how good they are, haha :)

  7. Heather says:

I try my hardest not to use sandwich bags – I packed my sandwich today in a reusable container. Yesterday I packed my carrots in an old ricotta cheese container!

I am going to check out those bags – can you throw them in the laundry or do you wash them by hand?

  8. mymarblerye says:

Hell yeah I use reusuable bags…but I do forget them when I go to the grocery store!! I need to work on that! anyways, have a great weekend dear!

  9. Kara says:

Recently I started making my own baby food to try to reduce how many of those little plastic container I was throwing away! It's hard to find a wide variety of organic produce where I live and that's the only limiting factor in my baby food making endeavors!

I love how you use your blog to impart messages about caring for the environment!

that peppermint JOe Joe looks bomb.com!

good for you for reducing plastic baggies! i try to reuse mine as much as possible and use biobags for my dog. but it's hard.

I looooove those tomato basil burgers… and now I think I might eat one out of my freezer tonight for dinner! Thanks for the inspiration. ;)

  13. Christine (The Raw Project) says:

That's awesome about Zip Lock bags, we're getting there with a new collection of reusable freezer containers. Thanks for the link, I need to check out that bag site.

Yes, my trunk is full of reusable shopping bags and I always re-use jars and store foods and leftovers in reusable containers.
The burger sounds great, as do all your eats.

Hi Melissa, I've always been a fan of your blog, but not brave enough to comment. I hope I can ask this question, you seem very approachable.
I am underweight right now. But experiencing bad swings of constipation and diarrhea. I was doing some leisure and slow elliptical and jogging (hardly anything) and some weights, and feeling okay. Then I decided to take a couple week off of nothing since my energy wasn't doing anything better. Since then, I've felt almost more tired, more achy, more spacey. Sometimes dizzy even. Its weird. And I'm so achy and stiff . I sit A LOT for work.
The thing is that my weight is so low. I've seen some bloggers that run that are as skinny or worse than me. But still….(i don't know how they function, and its discouraging to gain weight). Anyway, now I feel even more physically regressed and tired. In addition, a naturopath put me on a pretty rigorous diet plan (kinda restrictive and bland) in an effort to fix my really bad bowels. I know that makes sense, but I hate being obsessive about it. But the constipation and diarrhea can get real, real bad.
Have you or anyone ever had to take months and months (even years ) away from exercise? Just sitting? Am I making it worse? Even when I walk now, I'm so so tired.
By the way, my iron count is super super low. Maybe that is why I am spacey sometimes. I just feel…lost. Any thoughts. And I mean honest honest thoughts. sometimes people say "do this " or that…but then they are just exaggerating..I need a honest, straightforward thought. Thanks for any help.

I'm glad you found the reuseable bags. You've inspired me to buy some more. I really want to reduce our waste as well. You're doing awesome!

  19. Joanna says:

Hi Love! Thanks for posting where to get those cute and super amazing lunch baggies. I am obsessed with Esty and purchased a couple of things this year! I pack my lunch every day and I try not to use ziplocks but, sometimes I do. I think these reusable baggies are great because they aren't bulky like the tupperwares! Great find!!

I grew up in Victorville and no one ever believes me when I tell them how cold it can get in the winter! Beyond freezing!

  20. Val says:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the re-useable lunch bags!! I will definitely be looking into that :)

i could not agree with you more on the bags. so here is the other thing… i always have left overs at restaurants and I want to like take a glad plasticware with me but i feel like a total tool…so i haven't. I need to just get over it

  23. Elise says:

i am still using the same ziplocks from 2009. im not joking. i have the same bags now in LA from when i was living in nyc…gross? nope. im a hippie, yo!

still, i think those bags frm etsy are cool. but what are they made out of? could they hold things like carrots that are still wet. im starting to switch to the ecofriendly tupperware now though (i forget what the brand is)

    love what you are doing!!
