New Products…and Finally Tried Eating While Running!

Sorry I have left you the past few days!

I’m trying to beat an under the weather mood (even though the SUN is out and SHINING and it’s almost 80 DEGREES!) and of course what better to solve that with than getting in some new foods and combos and a great 12 mile run on a nice Sunday morning!

I won this package of Amy’s Soups from RunToTheFinish’s Giveaway a bit ago! I’ve only tried the Hearty Spanish Rice & Red Bean Soup, and it’s delish!

Of course I’ve been sampling many of the goods from my Newman’s Own Organics packages: Creme Filled Cookies! I used to be a HUGE OREO FAN back in the day, but I think I ate so many once I made myself sick and it has been a very long time since I’ve had them.

These are awesome!!! I love the great chocolate flavor in the cookies and omg the cream inside? Don’t even bet me started on how extraordinary it is!

I also finally tried one of the bars that I got at the San Antonio 1/2 Marathon Health Expo: Forze Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar. Goodness, if you want a bar that tastes like a Quaker Oats Chewy bar but is better for you (and claims to keep you full longer than most bars!) eat these!

This bar was (surprisingly) very good! It was very chewy and retained it’s shape well (even when beat up by the insides of my purse and it’s contents) and had great flavor! It also kept me full for a solid three hours! I have a Caramel and Berry Nut one left to try, so make sure to look out for them in the future

After taking two days off of running and only walking around 3 miles on Friday to Target, I decided I would try to run my 12 miler today! My leg was feeling pretty good and I was excited, though nervous, to finally try eating something during my long run.

I know I’ve never discussed it, but I don’t eat or really drink anything during my long runs, or really anything at all. I have only recently started drinking any water because in the past, anything I have ever put in my stomach during my run makes me heave and dizzy. I know this isn’t good, especially when you’re running anything over an hour or something like 7-8 miles…I supposed I’ve just been stubborn, or too scared about ruining a run.

After having a talk with Bobbi about different kinds of running Gu’s and such, I decided I would finally try the GU Strawberry Chomps sample I got in my swag bag from the San Antonio 1/2 Marathon Health Expo.

I headed out this morning around 10am after having my normal pre long run fuel (apple/PB/grains) with my brother. He only stayed with me for the first 1.5 miles, but it was nice to have him for a bit of company. I set out a predetermined 12 mile course and decided I would take two of the four GU Chomps around mile 7 or 8, depending on how I felt (I’ve noticed during past 10 or 11 milers that my body starts slowing down and slouching around miles 7 to 9 depending on previous fuel, weather, water, etc.)

I reached mile 7 feeling kinda weak and very thirsty (can we say cotton mouth!? It was probably around 75F when I was running, with a bit of wind, and about 10% humidity) so I stopped at a Jack In The Box, pissed off the cashier when I only asked for water, and took two of the GU Chomps.

Boy did those things make a difference! I stopped for a bit more water at a gas station around mile 9.5 and headed home (sadly with a raging headache…need to work on remedy-ing that!).

Overall I felt much more energized by the time I finished the 12 and was happy the GU Chomps didn’t upset my belly one bit! And they tasted great too! I’ll definitely be looking into getting more of these in the future! Not only that, but I only had the normal muscle soreness in my leg that I get when I run long like that…the chaffing though…that’s another matter in itself! Haha!

    Wow, I am jealous of your weather! Congrats on a great run! I have never eaten while running either, but the longest i've ever run is only 7 miles!!

    Congrats on finishing your 12-miler. That's awesome! I usually eat gummi bears when I do long runs. I don't bring any water, though, and now that all the drinking fountains are turned off, I'm going to have to start thinking about something to remedy that.

    All that fruit looks amazing. But I notice for myself that my blood sugar has a huge impact on how I feel. It could be that even the sweet from the fruit is throwing you off…

    You are certainly enjoying some good eats! That couscous with black beans sounds great, as does your banana/pb/newman's own cookies snack ;)

    Congrats on a successful long run! I have zero experience in that area, but I think it's awesome you can do it, and that you are learning some great fueling techniques, because obviously that's so so so important for endurance.

    I can't believe you don't drink or fuel on your LRs! No wonder you have a headache chica! It's hard for your body to play catch up when you're dehydrated post run. Glad the chomps worked for you. There are a couple of GU Roctanes that I looooooove.

    Congrats on making it through the run with a bad leg! I don't really drink water during my runs either (although before I started going long distances I used to lug my heavy aluminum bottle with me on mere two milers!) but I like to have some kind of Gu or gummy on 6+ers.
